Dryer fire reported at hotel

Apr 10, 2023Apr 10, 2023

A dryer caught fire Monday afternoon at the Fairfield Inn and Suites, 9970 Shaner Boulevard, Smithfield Township. Flames were contained to the hotel's laundry facility by the efforts of staff, fire company personnel and the building's sprinkler system. Smithfield Fire Chief Brad Glover said the call went out at 3 p.m. soon after the hotel's manager discovered the fire. Glover said the manager emptied an extinguisher on the flames while staff cleared the building. "They did a good job evacuating everyone," Glover said, reporting the hotel had 32 rooms booked at the time of the fire. He said the laundry room's sprinkler "did its job and kept the fire in check." When the first Smithfield engine arrived on scene, personnel ran a line directly to the laundry facility and finished off the fire, Glover said. The attack required minimal water, he said, reporting personnel only used water brought in on the engine. Firefighters spent the remainder of their time on the scene going through the three-story building to clear smoke. Glover said there was excellent turnout among personnel from all companies who assisted at the scene: Huntingdon Regional, Mill Creek, Alexandria, Marklesburg. Huntingdon Ambulance was also on the scene. Mount Union and Petersburg provided standby service at the Smithfield station.
